Curating A Creative Space for Myself: Painted Wallpaper

It has been always been a priority for me to have my own space in every home we’re had. As a military family this can be challenging. We are always moving and a home that fits all of your needs isn’t always in the cards.

When we purchased this house I didn’t know I was pregnant with Elijah. Some of the reasons I compromised on this home were based on having one child. Once I knew I was pregnant I had to reconfigure everything. The room closest to us would now be the nursery. It’s funny how different things are for the second child. I honestly couldn’t wait until Elijah was sleeping through the night so that he could share a room with Lonnie. I felt like the boys and all their things were taking over the house and I couldn’t find a way to keep everything in one place. My plan was that this would be the playroom. Great, somewhere they can play and all their toys can be. I can’t pay them to play in there. I felt like the toys were all over the house even moreso. Honey, that lasted all of 2 weeks before I was converting it to my office.

When I talking about how I wanted to design my office I knew I wanted a statement wall. I wanted something that would abstract and inspire me. I immediately consulted one of my besties, Pinterest, for inspiration. I found some cool patterns and said “I can do that.”

So he’s how I want about it.

What you will need:

  • Paint Brush
  • Roller Paint Pan
  • Sponges (linked HERE)
  • Scissors
  • Base Paint – Downy White by
  • Paint (in whatever color(s) you want for your design. If you’re going from the same look I used Spiced Cider by )
  1. Start by making sure your wall is free and clean of dust and dirt
  2. Paint with your base color. I did two coats of this paint but the previous color was green. I wanted to make sure it was covered completely. Three coats may be necessary.
  3. Cut your sponge long ways into 3 pieces. Take one of your pieces and cut it in half.
  4. Start by dipping a long sponge in your design color and cover on side of the sponge. Make sure you don’t have too much paint on your sponge because it may dip or smear on the wall.
  5. Press against the wall and check out your result. You can use your judge to see if you need to add more paint to your sponge or move on to your next move. This is meant to be abstract so after a while I wasn’t focused on making a distinct pattern.. I just did what I felt and it I loved the way it turned out!
